He has never worked inside a ship before and has no training for this dangerous, skilled work. Within two hours he is dead, his head crushed by the grab of a two tonne crane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simon was taking a year out from university in nearby Brighton when pressure from the dole to take any job on offer or lose his benefits led him to Personnel Selection. This employment agency had a clear legal duty to make sure any job they sent Simon to was safe. Instead they sent him to Euromin without making any safety checks at all.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"290\" height=\"174\" src=\"https:\/\/simonjones.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/unknown.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1597\" style=\"width:570px;height:342px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reeling from the shock of Simon&#8217;s death, Simon&#8217;s family and friends gradually realise no one at Euromin or Personnel Selection is going to be held accountable. Some climb lighting towers and unfurl banners reading SIMON JONES RIP and CASUALISATION KILLS. Euromin is forced to close and send all its casual workers home for the day on full pay. A banner reading MURDERERS is hung from its window and campaigners give out leaflets. The office is shut down and workers are again sent home for the day on full pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-dark-gray-color has-text-color\" style=\"font-size:32px\"><strong>20 SEPTEMBER 1998 MINISTER UNDER&nbsp;PRESSURE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"258\" src=\"https:\/\/simonjones.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/xmichael-meacher-200.jpg.pagespeed.ic_.1gfAcbGzJv.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1601\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a BBC Radio 5 interview Labour environment minister Michael Meacher <a href=\"https:\/\/simonjones.org.uk\/index.php\/documents\/government-minister-radio-interview-september-1998\/\">describes<\/a> Simon&#8217;s death as <em>&#8220;completely unacceptable&#8221;&nbsp;<\/em>and admits his government isn&#8217;t doing enough to protect people at work<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite saying that <em>&#8220;regulations do need to ensure that people are properly protected from taking jobs which could cause them serious injury or even death&#8221;<\/em> he does not call for any action against Euromin or Personnel Selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/simonjones.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/mps-20nov98.pdf\">writes<\/a> to all MPs quoting Meacher&#8217;s broadcast and asking them to raise our concerns about Simon&#8217;s death in Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-dark-gray-color has-text-color\" style=\"font-size:32px\"><strong>1PM 3 MARCH 1999 SPEECH IN PARLIAMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1568 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/simonjones.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Screenshot-2019-02-05-at-16.11.06-300x228.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simonjones.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Screenshot-2019-02-05-at-16.11.06-300x228.png 300w, https:\/\/simonjones.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Screenshot-2019-02-05-at-16.11.06-768x583.png 768w, https:\/\/simonjones.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Screenshot-2019-02-05-at-16.11.06.png 966w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Labour MP George Galloway gives a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theargus.co.uk\/news\/5168275.simon-jones-blood-is-on-your-hands\/\">speech<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/cm199899\/cmhansrd\/vo990303\/debtext\/90303-14.htm#90303-14_spnew2\">House of Commons<\/a> demanding Euromin and its manager James Martell be prosecuted over Simon\u2019s death. When requests to speak to HSE boss Jenny Bacon are rejected protesters walk on to Southwark Bridge and blockade it for three hours.
